The 13th 'Chinese Bridge' Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students Preliminary Competition in the Netherlands

In order to motivate the interest of Dutch secondary school students to learn Chinese and to enhance their understanding of the Chinese language and culture, the Education Section of Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands and the Groningen Confucius Institute will jointly organize the 2020 Chinese Proficiency Competition for Dutch Secondary School Students (the Preliminary of the 13th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students in the Netherlands.). The competition will provide a stage for students to show their proficiency of Chinese language and a platform for mutual communication.

I . Theme
Learn Chinese, live life to the fullest.

II. Time

18 April 2020 (Saturday)
13:30-17:00 (to be confirmed, the time will be adjusted according to the actual numbers of contestants.)

IV. Application requirements

1. Aged between 15 and 20 years old.
2. Dutch secondary school student. Non-Chinese nationality, born and raised outside China, native language is non-Chinese.
3. Prize winner in the 12th Chinese Bridge competition in China is not eligible.

Note: A round of written competition (multiple choice questions) will take place when the number of applicants exceeds 15 on 4 April, 2020.

The top 15 contestants will participate in the competition on 18 April 2020.

Taking into account the uncertainty of the coronavirus epidemic, if the number of applicants is less than 5, the competition will not take place. The judge committee will assess the capability of the applicants and recommend one contestant to participate in the competition in China on behalf of the Netherlands. The committee will keep all the lead teachers updated via email after 27 March 2020.

V. Content of the competition
The competition consists of three parts including knowledge quiz, speech and talent show. The total mark is 100 points. The contestants order will be decided by drawing lots. Please click here to check the scoring criteria.

PART 1 : Knowledge quiz
Knowledge quiz will be given in written form, covering Chinese culture, national conditions, Chinese language knowledge, etc. The contestants need to complete 30 multiple- choice questions within 30 minutes. Each question counts for 1 point and 30 points in total for this part. Please click here to check the quiz questions for preparation.
NOTE: The questions are for reference only. Actual examination questions are not completely from this test question bank.

PART 2 : Speech
This part includes a one-minute self introduction, a two-minute unscripted speech and a one-minute impromptu speech. The total mark is 40 points for this part.
Each contestant needs to prepare the self-introduction and the unscripted speech before the competition. Contestants are free to choose their own speech topics. Contestants will draw lots to get their topic for the impromptu speech before getting on stage and will be given six minutes to prepare for the impromptu speech.
The topics of the impromptu speech cover Chinese culture, national conditions, Chinese language knowledge, etc. Contestants can click here to check the example topics.

PART 3 : Talent show
Each contestant has a maximum of 3 minutes to show one Chinese talent that they have prepared based on their individual skills and interests. The total mark is 30 points for this part.

VI. Prizes

1. The competition awards 1 first-prize, 2 second-prize, 3 third-prize, and several honorable mentions.
2. There are two single prizes: Best Elegance Award, for the highest scoring individual in the part of individual speech; Best Talent Award, for the highest scoring individual in the part of talent show.

3. The first prize winner is likely to be recommended to participate in the semi-final of the 13th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students in China in 2020 on behalf of the Netherlands. The Confucius Institute Headquarters will provide the contestant with the round-trip international airfare, accommodation and transportation expenses for the competition in China. During the competition in China, the contestant will also have the chance to receive the Confucius Institute Scholarship for One-Semester Study. (Scholarship might be increased based on the contestant’s achievements in the semi-finals.)

VII. Contestant Registration
Contestants of each school will be registered by the lead teacher. No individual application will be accepted. Please click here to register and submit the application before 27 March 2020 with maximum 5 applicants from each school.

VIII. Guest Registration
We also welcome individuals and schools that don’t have contestants to watch the competition.

The Preliminary of the 13th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students in the Netherlands will be held by the Education Section of Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands and will be organized by the Groningen Confucius Institute.
