Lecture by Professor Liu Kouhsing - Comparison of Eastern and Western Culture

On the 3rd of December in 2016, Groningen Confucius Institute invited Professor Liu Kouhsing, master of Chinese culture from Taiwan, to deliver a lecture entitled "Comparison of Eastern and Western Culture". The lecture took place in Werkman College in Groningen. Professor Liu Kouhsing shared his insights into the comparison of two cultures from the perspectives of painting, music, and literature.

In explanation of the differences between two cultures, Professor Liu's lecture covered an array of works and masters, from Naamyam, Chinese painting, pipa to symphony and painting from the west, from Wang Xizhi, Zhang Daqian to Vincent van Gogh, Picasso. Professor Liu said that Chinese paintings rely mainly on lines, while Western paintings use a lot of color. He reiterated the beauty of Naamyam and the greatness of the invention of Twelve-tone equal temperament when talking about music. In the end of the lecture, he gave a detailed interpretation of Liyun Great Unity that people's vision for a utopia society, and he led all of the audience to sing the Great Unity.

Professor Liu Kouhsing was born in 1938, phonology disciple of Chinese culture master Lin Jingyi, phonology student of the disciple of Zhang Taiyan. He graduated from Soochow University in 1961 and became a professor teaching in the Chinese department of this university. Later he immigrated to Brazil and used to be a guest professor in University of Sãn Paulo. Professor Liu has given many courses before, including phonology, Chinese culture history, Chinese poetry and so on.
