➢ The History of Photography in China

Presenter: Oliver Moore, Professor of Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Groningen.
About the topic:
In this webinar, Professor Moore will share the research he did for a book on the history of photography in China. He will discuss photography as a medium broadly reported -- if unequally available – throughout the world after the announcement of its invention in Paris in 1839. Most histories of photography are marketed as global histories, but they say little concerning China. Or, if they do, China figures only as a viewable destination/object in Western exploration. His study seeks instead to understand Chinese definitions, engagement s and experiences that show how photography was adapted by Chinese users to Chinese conditions.
About the presenter:
Oliver Moore is Professor of Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Groningen. He studied Chinese at SOAS (London University and Fudan University (Shanghai). His PhD dissertation is a social history of Tang and Five Dynasties’ civil service examinations. He has worked at the British Museum, Leiden University and Kyoto University, and the National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden. His interests cover the history, art history, sociology and international relations of early and modern China. His forthcoming book is a study of China’s history of photography.

About the topic:
In this webinar, Mr. Matthias will shed light on the “Going Global” process of China’s publishing industry, as it is now underway for almost 15 years. Through some examples, an overview of the past & current status of China’s (academic) Publishing Industry, and its present level of internationalization will be sketched. By using also a few market – entry strategies of Western Presses, a broader picture of almost unlimited business opportunities on the Chinese market for any publishing house, either Chinese or of foreign origin, will be drawn.
About the presenter:
Dr. Matthias Wahls 吴乐思, is founder and managing director of his Intercultural Publishing Consultancy 乐思跨文化出版咨询, with special focus on international activities of Chinese Publishers and Publishing Group’s. He has worked at Elsevier Science (Amsterdam), Brill Academic Publishers (Leiden) and Bridge21 publishers (US). In China, M Wahls is well connected to many of the top tier publishing houses and publishing groups, like Science Press and Higher Education Press. M. Wahls does hold a PhD in Physical Chemistry in Leiden University and a MSc. in Chemistry in TU Clausthal, Germany. While being a born German, M Wahls lives in the Netherlands since 1993.

About the topic:
Harmonism as a way of thinking is essentially stemmed from the concept of harmony (hé/和) as is deeply-rooted in Chinese heritage. It can be approached and illustrated in the light of nine cardinal modes at least. These modes include the cosmic, the generative, the reciprocal, the paradigmatic, the dialectic, the synthetic, the receptive, the musical, and the sentimental. They straddle a number of domains ranging from the universe to the life and art world in accord with their respective functions and orientations. As observed in the historical development of China from the past to the present, their relevant applications are chiefly embodied in such typical cases as harmonism against conflictism but for ecumenism and neo-communitarianism.
About the presenter:
WANG Keping is currently a fellow of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and professor of Beijing International Studies University (BISU). He was formerly a visiting fellow of St. Anne’s College of Oxford University, visiting professor of School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry of Sydney University, honorary member of Olympic Center for Philosophy and Culture, and vice president of International Society for Universal Dialogue (ISUD). His main publications in English and Chinese include Rediscovery of Sino-Hellenic Ideas（2016）; Moral Poetics in Plato’s Laws (2015); Plato’s Poetics in the Republic (2005, rev. 2014); Reading the Dao: A Thematic Inquiry (2011); Chinese Way of Thinking (2009); Spirit of Chinese Poetics (2008); Ethos of Chinese Culture (2007); and Aesthetics in Tourism (2007, rev. 2015).

➢ How to Do Business in China: Cultural Difference Between East and West in Business Practice

Having witnessed the tremendous trade and investment growth between China and the Netherlands, Mr. Wu Jia found that many SMEs (Small and Medium size Enterprises) paid pricy lessons in starting business in foreign market, where cross-cultural issues play major role. To help audience on better understanding the most likely cultural issues lead to business failure, Mr. Wu Jia will share his experience in helping Dutch and Chinese companies in starting business in foreign market.
About the presenter:
Having studied and worked 10 years in the UK and 3 years in China, Mr. Wu Jia has been sent to Netherlands for mission of promoting trade between Netherlands and China since 2014 by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT Guangdong). Being a native Chinese and spent his years in European countries, Mr. Wu Jia has accumulated experience in helping companies from different cultural backgrounds. By facilitating trade mission, matchmaking and relation building in the past three years on the job, he is now working together with Dutch trade and investment promotion organisations on advising Chinese companies’ starting up and development in the Netherlands and Dutch companies to do business in China.
